Hush, Little Baby

Have you ever held one of those water baby dolls? Without their clothes on, they're not very snuggly at all. But that's what Scout wanted to snuggle with last night after I unlatched her from my breast and tried to sneak out of her room. She started crying. It was a distraught and sad cry. Somewhere in the sobs, she managed to get out the words "Baby...Baby!" Right away, I knew that she wanted the plasticky, naked, water baby doll that I had tossed at the foot of the bed after I thought she was asleep. She stopped crying immediately after I placed the cold, rubbery doll in the crook of her arm....then rolled over and went to sleep.

Fast forward to 4:21 AM, as I am sitting here typing this. I think it was around 3:00 when I heard Scout standing at her baby gate fussing for me. I had to pee SO SO SO bad, but she was getting really upset and I would have had to walk right past her to go to the bathroom. So I ignored my screaming bladder and went straight to her room to try to nurse her back to sleep. I sat on the floor, nursing her on my lap, while wriggling my toes wildly, trying to hold back the pee. She seemed to be falling asleep, so I laid her in bed with her still latched on. She rolled over and squirmed for a while and as I was rubbing her back and patting her bottom, I just couldn't take it anymore - I HAD to use the bathroom. She wasn't quite asleep when I got up and quickly darted out of the room. I tried to be quiet while opening the door and and stepping over the gate, but it was too late. She knew I had left the room and screamed the whole time I was on the toilet. I was so frustrated because I KNOW that if I would have just been able to quietly pat her on the back for a few more minutes, she would have fallen asleep and I would have been able to leave the room and go back to bed. But no. Stupid bladder. Maybe I should have just freakin' peed my pants.

I went back in to calm her down. I tried nursing her again. And again, I think she was on the brink of sleep when I got a stupid tickle in the back of my throat (I am fighting a yucky cold that has made its way into my chest) and I couldn't help it...I coughed LOUD. It woke her up out of the semi-sleep she was in. I have no idea what time it was at that point. I was about to pull my hair out.

She squirmed and tried to get off the bed for a long time, while I just continued to try to comfort her. We nursed a couple more times. I was getting angrier and angrier as her razor-sharp finger nails scraped against my skin. (she kneads my chest and fiddles around with my neck and hair as she's falling asleep while nursing sometimes. It normally doesn't bother me, but her long little nails were about to make me insane!!) Somewhere in the squirming and rolling around on the bed, she managed to kick me in the head really hard twice and fart in my face.

She is finally back to sleep. And me? I am wide awake, drinking some apple juice and typing a stupid blog post. My throat really hurts and I feel like I have junk in my lungs that needs to come out. Laying down only makes it worse. I'd better force myself to go to sleep because DH's alarm goes off at 6:30 AM and I need to pack his lunch and make his breakfast. He's been having to do it himself a lot lately because of Scout's wacky sleep and whiney clinginess in the morning. I dunno. The way I'm feeling now, he may be on his own again. Poor guy.

Scout, good thing you're so adorable, 'cause otherwise I wouldn't be able to take the sleep madness that you throw at me.

Is it wrong that I laughed my ass off when I read the part about her farting in your face?

Amy - no, it's not wrong. You can totally laugh. It all seems funny to me now that it's not 4 AM and I've had 2 huge cups of coffee. I heart caffeine.
