Date Night with the Kiddo

Wow - I had an exciting birthday. We went to the mall and walked around and ate at Chic-fil-A and had ice cream at Haagen Daas. Then, we went to see The Simpsons Movie at the movie theater!.....with Scout!
DH and I were a little nervous about it, but we just had to attempt it. The Simpsons is our favorite and it came out on my birthday! And then to make it even more perfect, now it's Scout's first movie.
She did really well. She slept and nursed peacefully through the whole 30 minutes of previews. (Uuuughh) and then woke up and got a little squirmy towards the beginning of the movie, so I sat her upright on my lap and she stared quietly at the screen for a while (I know, flame me for letting my baby watch a movie....I'm a bad mom). So, get this: Of course, the movie is really loud and that doesn't phase her one bit....the lady sitting next to me pops the top on her can of soda and Scout flinches really hard, flips out and starts crying. It was a very short-lived cry. I didn't even make it to the door before she stopped...and we were on the aisle in the very back, close to the exit. I don't think it was too horribly disturbing to the people around us. That was the only time a peep was ever heard from her. It was actually WAY less disruptive than the lady in front who was laughing like a hyena and making loud comments. I sat in the back of the theater on the floor and nursed her the rest of the time. I only missed a few minutes of the movie when I went to change her diaper. Over all, I would say that this very risky outing was a success.
The 25-30 minute drive home was a different story. Scout was exhausted from our busy day. Her whole evening routine had been shaken up pretty badly. Pile that on top of the fact that she hates car rides to begin with. She screamed and SCREAMED in the car...even with me in the back trying to soothe her. We stopped to pick up DH's truck on the way home and we took her out of the car and walked around with her and I nursed her. Her red teary eyes and distraught face was so heartbreaking. She had gotten herself so worked up, she was choking on her drool. I nursed her for a while and she calmed down. I felt so bad that I had to put her back in the seat. She was much better the rest of the way home. She fussed a little and quickly fell asleep. I don't think she had the energy to cry anymore. I nursed her down to sleep in bed when we got home. I'm so proud of her for being cooperative. She deserved to have a total melt-down at the end of the night, that's for sure.

That's great! I never took Sam to the movies when he was small and I regret it. I bet he'd have done great. Now, though, I think he'd be too bored.
Sam really hated car rides too. Isn't it the worst? Everyone kept telling me to take him for drives and I kept trying to explain that it just made things worse. He had a complete turnaround at about two months and became such a happy traveler. I bet the same thing happens with Scout (though the exact timing I'm sure will be arbitrary).
How was the movie?
Happy birthday! How did you like the movie? Jonathon wants to go see it but I'm not a big Simpson's fan so I think he's going to recruit a guy friend to go instead. Bailey does okay with car rides but I think it helps that her carseat is the kind that comes out of the base so she doesn't have to get moved in and out of it. Sometimes she fusses as we're buckling her in but then once we pick up the carrier and start walking or put it in the backseat she stops... it's like she knows the car ride is coming and she's not just needlessly trapped :)
Ooh, Annika - I PRAY that Scout does a 180 with car rides like Sam did too. That would be awesome! We just went grocery shopping this evening and the ride there and back was awful. We even waited until all conditions were right - just after she got up from a nap, happy and refreshed...fed and diapered....car nice and cooled off before putting her in. Nope. She still wasn't having it. (I've also tried driving when she's tired so she'll fall asleep and I've tried waiting to feed her until we get to our destination incase it's riding on a full belly that's upsetting her....we also switched to an infant carrier car seat and put the convertible away until she gets bigger. Nope. Nothing works.) She also just started this thing where she leans forward, grunts, pulls at the straps, and arches her back in a desperate attempt to escape. It's so sad.
I don't know whether to try to drive frequently with her so she'll get used to it, or if I should spare her the trauma and continue to be the hermit I've been since was born until the car-hating phase passes.
The movie was pretty good. I am a die hard Simpsons fan. Every time they release a season on DVD, we buy it. I was afraid that the movie would be a disappointment because DH and I are so critical. The last few seasons just haven't been as hilarious as say, seasons 7 & 8. I guess the writers must've been really great back then.
Pretty good writing on the movie. There were definitely some laugh-out-loud moments. But I wonder if I would've liked it as much if we wouldn't have seen it in the theater. The theater was packed and everyone laughed loudly at the funny parts...maybe I am just impressionable and got caught up in laughing with everyone else.
I can't wait to watch it at home to see if I'll feel the same about it. I so much want to be a spoiler and share my favorite part with you....but I'll be good and I won't. I'm sure you've probably seen the previews, so I will say that I can't get the Spider-pig song out of my head.
OMG! Tara....you're not a Simpson's fan? I can't be your friend anymore.
Ha ha ha Just kidding. LOL We have plenty of other things in common. ;)
Jonathon has a date to go see The Simpsons Movie tomorrow night with some guys. Thank goodness. I don't have to go!!!
